Battery Dance is a New York City-based performing arts organization that develops and presents contemporary dance works, tours internationally, and brings dance to public spaces, focusing on communities facing hardship and areas of conflict. Led by founder and artistic director Jonathan Hollander, the company has created more than 100 original works through collaborations with a diverse range of composers and designers, performed by a skilled troupe. It runs the free Battery Dance Festival, a longstanding annual program that has introduced New Yorkers to more than 225 dance companies over its 35-year history. Based in New York City for more than four decades, Battery Dance operates as a cultural ambassador through participation in international festivals, conferences, symposia, and Dancing to Connect programs across 65 countries on five continents, and in August 2025 it announced workshop offerings tied to its 44th Annual Battery Dance Festival. In addition to performances, it conducts arts-in-education programs in New York City public schools, with teaching artists delivering in-school performances and master classes to introduce students to diverse dance traditions.
