Beijing Jiaotong University is a national key university in Beijing, China, with historical roots in railway management and telecommunications education. Its precursors include the Beijing Railway Management Training Institute and the Beijing School of Posts and Telecommunications, and in 1921 it formed the National Jiaotong University with branches in Beijing, Shanghai, and Tangshan. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the institution was renamed Northern Jiaotong University, and its first president was appointed by Mao Zedong. In 2003, the university restored its current name, affirming its established role within China's higher education system. Throughout its development, BJTU expanded its graduate education, being among the first key universities authorized to confer master’s and doctoral degrees in 1981.
