Bifröst University is a private, self-governing, non-profit higher education institution based in Borgarnes, Iceland. It traces its origins to 1918, when it was founded in Reykjavík as Samvinnuskólinn, modeled after Ruskin College in Oxford, with the aim of training leaders for business and society. Since relocating to Borgarfjörður in 1955, it has evolved from a business-focused school into a university accredited by Iceland's Ministry of Education in 1988. Its expansion continued with the introduction of degrees in law in 2002 and social science in 2005, and it adopted its current name in 2006. The campus sits roughly 110 kilometers from Reykjavík, about a 90-minute drive, situating the university within the Borgarfjörður region. In May 2026, Bifröst hosted the conference New Frontiers of European Security: The Arctic and the European Periphery at the Nordic House, reflecting its engagement with regional policy discussions.
