Its current members are Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento State, and Weber State, with Northern Colorado joining in 2006. Based in Ogden, Utah, the conference is part of the spectator sports ecosystem and coordinates competition among its membership through a relatively small staff. In 2025 the conference expanded its partnership with Teamworks to strengthen operational efficiency and student-athlete support across the Football Championship Subdivision. Earlier, the Knight Commission invested in the Big Sky to implement the CARE Model principles aimed at improving the experiences of college athletes. The conference has also publicly recognized academic achievement, including the 2024 Spring All-Academic Team for track and field, golf, and tennis.
