Big Sky Economic Development operates as a public-private partnership that combines a public agency, the Big Sky Economic Development Authority, with a private economic development corporation, the Big Sky Economic Development Corporation. The Authority evolved from the Montana TradePort Authority, established in 1989 by the Yellowstone County Board of Commissioners to facilitate the development of businesses that support the community and quality of life. The private EDC, launched in 2002, works to recruit primary sector businesses and to retain and expand existing Yellowstone County firms that align with community goals; more than 160 member-investor partners participate in activities related to recruitment, retention, legislative matters, and financing. Based in Billings, Montana, the organization serves Yellowstone County and seeks to stimulate job growth and economic activity in the region. Its focus is on attracting primary sector employers and supporting existing local businesses to strengthen the local economy and quality of life. In October 2025, the organization appointed Brandon Berger as interim executive director.
