It manages a 3,920-acre forest and a scientific field station in the Hudson Highlands, roughly 60 miles north of New York City. The organization operates within the zoos and botanical gardens sector and collaborates with a consortium of universities, schools, and scientific and cultural institutions to advance inquiry and develop educational programs for students from kindergarten through university, as well as teachers and the broader public. This collaborative approach supports conservation and research across the Hudson Highlands and the wider mid-Hudson Valley region.
Based in Cornwall, New York, Black Rock Forest partners with multiple institutions to pursue conservation goals in its regional area. It launched a 2025 Phenology Program that engaged volunteers to participate in seasonal research activities.
