Based in Boston, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) is a long-established program that aims to cultivate musical excellence through high-quality training and performance opportunities for qualified K-12 students, while expanding access through financial assistance and outreach. Since its founding in 1958, BYSO has grown from a single ensemble into a comprehensive system that now includes three full symphonic orchestras, a string training orchestra, six chamber orchestras, a preparatory wind ensemble, a chamber music program, and a nationally recognized string training program. Each year, BYSO auditions nearly 750 students from New England aged 7-18 and accepts about 450, providing coaching and around 20 performances in prominent Boston venues; every other year, its most advanced ensemble (BYS) completes the season with an international tour. It is recognized nationally as a model for music and arts education. In January 2026, BYSO appointed Keith C. Elder as President & CEO, signaling continued leadership development for the organization.
