Bowery Farming designs and operates indoor vertical farms outside urban centers to grow produce that is free of pesticides and pollutants while using less water and land than traditional farming. The network of farms is coordinated by a proprietary operating system, supporting a streamlined, flavor- and safety-focused supply chain. It is the largest vertical farming company in the United States, with five farms in operation and two additional commercial facilities under development that will more than double production. Its produce is distributed through major retailers and partners, with availability in about 1,800 locations including Whole Foods, Amazon, Walmart, Safeway/Albertsons, and Ahold Delhaize. Bowery is based in New York City and has operated in the market since 2016; in November 2024 it closed its Nottingham facility in the United Kingdom and related offices, resulting in layoffs.
