BBRF is a New York–based nonprofit that funds mental health research through grants to scientists around the world. It focuses on innovative work in neuroscience and psychiatry to better understand the causes of brain and behavior disorders and to develop new treatments. Since its inception in 1987, the foundation has awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in grants to thousands of researchers, with donor gifts directed entirely to research while its operating costs are covered by separate foundation grants. The organization operates within the philanthropic fundraising space, channeling charitable contributions into scientific investigations that address conditions such as addiction, ADHD, anxiety, autism, depression, OCD, PTSD, and schizophrenia. With a small to mid-sized team based in New York City, the foundation coordinates global research funding and outreach to advance scientific progress in mental health. Most recently, it organized its International Mental Health Research Symposium in October 2025, reflecting ongoing activity to convene researchers and advocates around advances in brain and behavior research.
