The Brooklyn Public Library is a large public library system based in Brooklyn, New York, established in 1896. It operates 59 branches across the borough, with a branch within a half-mile of nearly all of Brooklyn's 2.6 million residents. The library maintains a substantial collection of print materials and eBooks, and offers digital resources available 24/7, along with programs in culture, literacy, after-school support, workforce development, and digital literacy. It is governed by a non-salaried Board of Trustees and relies on more than 2,000 volunteers contributing over 100,000 hours annually, plus 17 Friends Groups and a Brooklyn Eagles group focused on youth engagement. In 2014, the American Library Association ranked BPL third in the nation for public programs offered and program attendance. In 2026, it broke ground on a new Canarsie branch as part of ongoing expansion of its neighborhood network.
