The Bulgarian National Bank is Bulgaria’s central bank and independent issuing authority, reporting to the National Assembly. It was established on January 25, 1879, and the first banking operation was conducted on June 6, 1879. Based in Sofia, its core mandate is to maintain currency stability and to strengthen and develop the banking and credit system for the Bulgarian state and its financial sector, with independence guaranteed by its organic law and by the Treaty establishing the European Community. Since January 1, 2007, the bank has been a full member of the European System of Central Banks, and its Governor sits on the General Council of the European Central Bank. In 2026 the BNB participated in the Financial Forum Innovations 2026, reflecting ongoing engagement with national and European financial policy discussions.
