The Burbank Sister City Committee is a volunteer organization of members of the Burbank community. The city of Burbank has four international sister cities: Ota, Japan; Incheon, South Korea; Gaborone, Botswana; and Solna, Sweden. Every summer, a dozen or so students from one of our Sister Cities are chosen to visit Burbank and stay with local families, and students from Burbank are selected to spend two weeks visiting one of our Sister Cities. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about a different culture first hand, and to represent our city and our country to people who are always eager to learn about Americans! Burbank families are always needed to host our guests while they are here. Please consider taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity and host a student in your home this Summer for one or both weeks. To learn more about hosting, attend a Sister City Committee meeting held the first Monday of every month at 6:30 PM in the auditorium at the Burbank Central Library. We would love to have you join us! Applications to be a hosting family can be downloaded on our site, or can be found at any of the Burbank Public Library branch locations. For more information on meeting times, etc., call the Library at 818 238-5551. The concept of Sister City affiliations between the United States and other nations began shortly after the Second World War. It developed into a national initiative when then President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed the people-to-people program at a White House Conference in 1956.
