The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) is a U.S. federal regulator overseeing offshore energy activities, with a mandate to promote safety, protect the environment, and conserve offshore resources through regulatory oversight and enforcement. Created in 2011 as part of a reorganization of the Department of the Interior's offshore regulatory structure, BSEE develops standards and regulations and fosters a safety-focused culture in offshore work. Its core functions include administering an offshore regulatory program, reviewing Oil Spill Response Plans to verify compliance, enforcing environmental requirements by operators, and supporting scientific research to strengthen its capacity and keep pace with industry advances.
