The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service is a regional health system in Far North Queensland that provides hospital care, health services, and related education and research activities. It serves Cairns, Tablelands, and Cassowary Coast residents, a population of more than 250,000, and offers specialist services to the Torres Strait and Cape York regions. Cairns Hospital serves as the area’s primary referral center, while care is delivered across more than 30 regional, rural, and remote facilities over a geographic area of about 142,900 square kilometres. The service is largely self-sufficient, with only a small number of high-level acute services provided in Townsville and Brisbane. Staff and patients are viewed as part of the communities served, and community involvement in planning and evaluation is integral to health outcomes. The organization is part of Queensland Health and adheres to core values of integrity, compassion, accountability and respect.
