The California Association for Nurse Practitioners (CANP) functions as a statewide professional network and advocacy forum for nurse practitioners, providing consistent guidance to support practice and reduce barriers. Based in Sacramento, California, CANP traces its roots to 1977, when it was founded as the California Coalition of Nurse Practitioners by nurse practitioners from the University of California, Davis. Since then, CANP has grown into a statewide network organized into 22 regions with nearly 4,300 members, many with active local chapters. Its mission centers on strengthening the nurse practitioner movement through statewide communication, enhancing the public image of the NP profession, and backing legislative efforts to develop the NP role and improve healthcare system responsiveness. CANP operates within the public policy arena to coordinate regional activity and professional development for practitioners across California. In March 2026, CANP announced a multi-year strategic partnership with ClinicalPulse, a mobile-first clinical education platform for nurse practitioners, marking a concrete collaboration to advance NP education.
