CALCOG acts as a member association for 49 regional public agencies in California, whose member entities collectively serve counties, cities, and local communities. The organization\'s purpose is to ensure that every city and county has access to effective regional governance, providing a forum for policy decisions on key issues such as transportation investments, reducing car dependence, and resilience planning. Its work relies on information sharing, storytelling, and building consensus, with advocacy for policy change when necessary.

Based in Sacramento, California, CALCOG sits within the public policy sector and connects state-level and local governance to support its members in serving their jurisdictions. It maintains a collaborative space for policy discussion and information exchange among regional actors. In March 2026, CALCOG presented the Eureka Award for Regional Excellence in Innovative Leadership to the Local Travel Network of SBCCOG at its Regional Leadership Forum in Long Beach.
