The California Independent Petroleum Association is a nonprofit, nonpartisan trade association based in Sacramento, California, representing about 500 independent crude oil and natural gas producers, royalty owners, and service and supply companies operating in the state. Its membership accounts for roughly 70% of California's oil production and 90% of its natural gas production. Created in 1976 from a merger of two earlier associations, CIPA has since prioritized the political, regulatory, and public policy interests of independent oil and gas producers. As a participant in government relations services, the organization seeks to influence policy and regulatory outcomes affecting its members' operations in California. In early 2023, CIPA launched the Stop The Energy Shutdown campaign, with the aim of placing a referendum on a bill for the 2024 election cycle. Historically, the association has engaged in collaborative efforts with industry partners, including a 2015 initiative with Linn Energy and California Resources Corporation to provide summer experiences for graduating seniors.
