California Indian Legal Services (CILS) is a California-based public-interest law firm focused on advancing Indian rights. Founded in 1967, it pursues systemic change through litigation, advocacy, community development, and related strategies to protect the rights of California Indians. The organization provides legal representation to California Indian tribes and organizations, defends rights at local, state, and national levels, and delivers direct services and education to low-income Indian individuals on Federal Indian Law issues, serving dozens of tribes and thousands of individuals and families. CILS operates four offices across the state—Bishop, Escondido, Eureka, and Sacramento—with the principal office located in Sacramento since 2021. Its board includes California Indians appointed by tribes and organizations across the state, together with representatives appointed by the State Bar of California.
