The California Institute for Rural Studies is a research organization focused on advancing social justice in rural California through a foundation of sustainable communities and healthy agriculture. Its work centers on marginalized populations, employing research, partnership, and community engagement to generate practical improvements on the ground and to inform public policy and advocacy aimed at rural injustice. Based in Walnut Creek, California, the institute emphasizes a values-informed approach to scientific inquiry, prioritizing the long-term public interest in its investigations. As it operates without members or direct constituents, collaboration with statewide organizations is essential to its mission and goals. A recent emphasis lies in bringing rural California into broader conversations about sustainability and the food movement while providing data-driven tools to support policy change and advocacy.
