CYS is one of the oldest youth symphonies in the US, providing a unique education to student musicians in NC and SC. Since 1955, CYS has been a cultural treasure and fostered exceptional musicianship, pride and self-esteem in young people. CYS encourages artistic excellence in a nurturing environment by providing the highest quality orchestral training and performance opportunities to qualified musicians, grades K-12, and makes participation possible through many financial aid and work programs. CYS features 185+ student musicians ranging from 6 to 18 years old and provides unique and high-quality music education, orchestral training, and performance opportunities that students may not otherwise receive. The CYS is comprised of of three orchestras: Repertory Orchestra (RO): The RO is the beginning level of the CYS orchestras and contains wind, strings, and percussion players who are building individual performance skills and ensemble playing techniques. The large body of original music and arrangements of the standard orchestral repertoire provides the core music for this group. RO members have opportunities throughout the year to participate in sectionals, ensembles, and public performances. Concert Orchestra (CO): The CO is the intermediate level and contains wind, strings and percussion players who are learning transpositional techniques and sight-reading skills. Students study advanced high school orchestral repertoire. Sectional opportunities are offered for each section on a regular basis. This experience is designed for students to successfully make the transition to perform in the Symphony Orchestra. Symphony Orchestra (SO) The SO provides experience and instruction to advanced young musicians who perform standard orchestral repertoire, always in original editions. The SO features the most skilled, talented, and experienced student musicians in the Carolinas.
