CB&I AREVA MOX Services, LLC is a mid-sized construction-focused company formed to design, build, and operate a Mixed Oxide fuel fabrication facility as part of the United States’ program to dispose of surplus weapon-grade plutonium. The facility would process surplus weapon-grade plutonium by removing impurities and combining it with uranium oxide to form MOX fuel pellets for use in commercial reactor assemblies. Its design draws on AREVA’s MOX facilities in France and is being adapted to meet United States safety and security requirements under Nuclear Regulatory Commission oversight, with construction planned at the Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina. When operational, the plant is expected to convert about 3.5 metric tons of weapon-grade plutonium into MOX fuel assemblies each year and would be licensed to operate for roughly two decades. In September 2020, the Department of Energy contracted Shaw AREVA MOX Services LLC to design, construct, and operate the MOX project.
