Founded in 2009 and based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, CEF focuses on people facing homelessness or housing instability. The organization provides tailored, person-focused support alongside financial literacy education and tools to help individuals grow savings and build assets. Members receive ongoing, one-on-one guidance from volunteer Advocates who are trained in racial equity and trauma-informed approaches to help pursue their stated goals, such as securing housing or finding work. Through these services, CEF aims to promote equity and narrow the racial wealth divide by supporting transitions out of poverty. CEF also builds a broader community of support and provides hands-on learning opportunities for Advocates, while pursuing advocacy and cross-sector collaboration to address the systemic drivers of homelessness and poverty. The organization acknowledges the harmful effects of systemic racism on Black and Brown communities and relies on volunteers, partners with shared values, and cross-spectrum collaborations to deliver holistic support to each Member.
