CNAS is an independent, bipartisan nonprofit think tank focused on national security and defense policy, based in Washington, DC. It conducts research and analysis to produce policy options and to inform national security discussions. Founded in 2007 by Dr. Kurt M. Campbell and Michèle A. Flournoy, CNAS's work has informed key U.S. strategic choices and has been acted on by leaders from both major parties in the executive branch and on Capitol Hill. Its customers include policymakers, experts, and the public, with the goal of shaping and elevating national security debates. The organization positions itself as a provider of evidence-based analysis aimed at informing decision-making across security issues. In October 2023, CNAS launched a Defense Technology Task Force to explore policy implications at the intersection of defense technology and national security.
