The Center for Economic Progress is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization focused on improving the financial stability of low-income, working families through tax and financial services. Its offerings include free, high-quality tax preparation for low-wage workers and individuals below specified income thresholds, as well as a tax clinic that provides representation for IRS controversies and training for small businesses on record keeping and self-employment tax matters. The organization also promotes financial education and access to safe banking products, offering workshops, one-on-one coaching, and guidance on budgeting, credit improvement, and avoiding predatory services. Founded in 1990 by a public benefits lawyer, CEP builds on a history of assisting underserved populations with access to essential financial services and public resources. In addition to direct services, it informs public policy to support broader financial stability for its target communities. A recent collaboration with Waubonsee partners is noted in local coverage, reflecting its ongoing community engagement efforts.
