The Center for the National Interest is a small, non-partisan nonprofit public policy organization focused on international affairs, based in Washington, District of Columbia. It maintains a bipartisan board and was founded in 1994 by former President Richard Nixon as an independent division of the Nixon Library and Birthplace Foundation, later becoming an independent entity in 2011 and adopting its current name. Its mission centers on advancing strategic realism in U.S. foreign policy grounded in a principled view of national interests and examining both allies and adversaries as well as the driving forces of the modern world, including military power, technology, energy, trade, and finance. The center promotes public understanding and debate about U.S. foreign policy and broader international affairs, seeking pragmatic policy options aligned with national interests. It publishes The National Interest, a foreign policy magazine that has been produced since 2000, with roots dating to 1985. The organization has engaged in external collaborations, such as hosting a foreign policy roundtable with the Charles Koch Institute.
