The Center for Tire Research (CenTiRe) is a collaborative research center operating under the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center program, focused on pre-competitive tire and tire-related materials, physics, testing, sustainability, and manufacturing. It partners with Virginia Tech and the University of Akron to conduct research requested by industry members from tires, vehicles, materials, and testing, while also providing training opportunities for students. Industry members participate through an Industry Advisory Board, guiding research selection and funding, and benefiting from technology transfer and access to graduate students who may become interns or employees. CenTiRe’s work spans molecular interactions, compounding, material characterization, durability and road-tire interactions, noise, intelligent tire concepts, and tire/vehicle/road surface simulations, with ongoing growth in membership and university collaborations. The organization is based in Blacksburg, Virginia, and maintains a presence through its two university sites to support member-driven research and workforce development. A recent development includes engagement in industry events and additions to its advisory board, reflecting continued expansion of its research network and activities.
