CTEC is a research center focused on terrorism, extremism, and counterterrorism, based in Monterey, California, within the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. It draws on expertise from both Middlebury College and the Middlebury Institute, engaging students and professionals in its work. The center operates in the field of research services, producing analysis on security-related topics. With a relatively small team, it combines academic and practitioner perspectives to study how modern threats evolve. Its research program is organized around five core pillars: online extremism (including collaborations with technology companies); threat financing with a focus on cryptocurrency and money laundering; artificial intelligence (in partnership with OpenAI); asymmetric conflict (covering special operations, disinformation, and civil war); and education (featuring a speaker series, student workshops, and data-analysis mentoring). These pillars reflect an emphasis on understanding digital threats, illicit finance, advanced technologies, conflict dynamics, and capacity-building through education.
