Central Iowa Shelter & Services (CISS) is a Des Moines nonprofit established in 1992 that provides no-cost, accessible shelter, meals, and supportive services to adults experiencing homelessness, with the goal of helping them move toward self-sufficiency. Its capacity includes an expanded emergency shelter with 150 beds, transitional housing for veterans with 19 rooms, and 38 Project Based Section 8 voucher efficiency apartments, along with facilities such as an on-site health clinic, a food pantry, a clothing closet, classrooms, and a 30-foot growing dome. About 2,000 homeless individuals are served each year through emergency shelter and related supports, with programming encompassing meals, shower and laundry access, a weekly medical clinic, group counseling, individualized case management, life skills instruction, and referrals to community services. The organization serves adults facing homelessness and delivers integrated housing and support services intended to stabilize lives and advance independence. In April 2026, Bridge Home Inc. began a partnership with CISS to operate a 24-hour emergency shelter in Des Moines.
