Mission Statement: To reduce the risk of catastrophic flooding to people and property within the California Central Valley.

The Central Valley Flood Protection Board (CVFPB) serves as liaison between the State of California, its residents, property owners, Central Valley agencies, and the United States government. Since 2011 is has worked to provide flood protection within California’s Central Valley, while also considering environmental and habitat concerns. Under California law, any modification to the federal/State flood control system, encroachment, or project on or near the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers or their tribu¬taries must be approved by the Board. In July 2014, additional responsibility was granted to the Board through an update to the California Water Code, Title 23, and Div. 1, which outlines new enforcement authority.

The CVFPB is governed by a Board consisting of seven Governor-appointed and Senate-confirmed members, plus two non-voting ex-officio members from the California Legislature. The monthly public Board meetings provide an open forum where all interests may express their views regarding flood management, and where permits, Board-sponsored projects, and other actions are reviewed and approved. These regular business meetings take place on the fourth Friday of the month at the Sacramento City Hall building at 901 I Street, on the first floor in the Council Chambers. These meetings are webcasted live.

Please check out our website for more information on obtaining an encroachment permit, to learn more about our enforcement authority, or to find the link to our archived and live meeting webcasts.
