The Chesapeake Fire Department is a public-safety agency serving the City of Chesapeake, Virginia. From 15 fire stations, it provides fire protection, rescue, and emergency medical services across 353 square miles of urban, suburban, and rural areas for about 227,000 residents. The department comprises more than 428 members. Its operations include specialized teams for hazardous materials, technical rescue, a marine fireboat, and foam firefighting. Beyond response, it conducts fire prevention, life-safety education, arson investigation, code enforcement, plans review, environmental quality work, and runs the Office of Emergency Management. Chesapeake is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area and was formed in 1963 through the consolidation of the City of South Norfolk with remnants of Norfolk County.
