Children's Hospital Boston, located in Boston, Massachusetts, is a 396-bed pediatric health care center serving patients from birth through 21 years of age. It is one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States and operates as a major center for pediatric health care and research. The hospital serves as the primary pediatric teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, with most physicians holding faculty appointments. The institution hosts what it describes as the world's largest research enterprise based at a pediatric medical center, comprising more than 600 scientists, including eight National Academy of Sciences members, eleven Institute of Medicine members, and twelve Howard Hughes Medical Institute members. In 2003, philanthropic gifts funded the 295,000-square-foot Karp Family Research Laboratories, expanding the hospital's research space by more than 60 percent.
