CHIME Institute is a nonprofit focused on primary and secondary education, based in Northridge, California, and founded in 1990. It advances a distinctive model of inclusive education in which children who reflect the region’s demographics—typical learners, students with special needs, and gifted learners—learn together in the same classrooms. The organization originated with an early childhood program at California State University, Northridge and later expanded to charter elementary in 2001 and charter middle in 2003. In 2010 these schools merged into a kindergarten through eighth grade campus named CHIME Institute’s Schwarzenegger Community School, with a structure designed to address each child’s learning needs and strengths. The Institute serves as a national exemplar by collaborating with Cal State Northridge's Michael D. Eisner College of Education and the Los Angeles Unified School District to support educator research and practice. It regularly hosts visitors from nearby districts and from abroad, including participants from Japan and the United Kingdom, who seek to learn from CHIME’s approach.
