The Chinese Historical Society of America is a San Francisco-based organization dedicated to interpreting, preserving, and promoting the social, cultural, and political history and contributions of Chinese Americans. Founded in 1963, it began at a time when the Chinese American population was smaller and now serves as a steward of a narrative tied to a growing and increasingly visible community. The organization advances understanding through exhibitions, publications, and educational programs conducted in its museum and learning center. It is housed in the Julia Morgan-designed Chinatown YWCA building at 965 Clay Street. The CHSA offers tours for a nominal fee and maintains online content via chsa.org, with information shared on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram. In June 2026, CHSA partnered with Chinese for Affirmative Action, Rose Pak Community Fund, and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association to host a commemorative ceremony honoring Wong Kim Ark, a Chinese American civil rights figure whose landmark court ruling affirmed birthright citizenship.
