Christel House Academy officially added South to the name in 2013. This change was made to establish Christel House Academy as the corporate entity operating the collection of Christel House schools in Indianapolis. Christel House Academy opened on September 3, 2002 as a charter school with 276 students in kindergarten through fourth grade. Today, Christel House Academy is an award winning K-12 school. Located on the near Southside of Indianapolis in the Garfield Park area, the Academy is a Mayor of Indianapolis authorized public charter school. Recognized as an Exemplary school by the IDOE, Christel House Academy is an innovated school focused on transforming lives in intercity Indianapolis. Using Expeditionary Learning principles, Christel House Academy now operates secondary education by offering 9-12 programming. The Watanabe High School (named in honor of Dr. August "Gus" Watanabe, a prominent life scientist) wing is the latest addition to the campus.
