The City of Carbondale is located in southern Illinios. It has more than 26,300 residents and is the home of a thriving business community which is strongly boosted by Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The City employs approximately 283 full-time eployees and includes Police and Fire Protection, Public Works and Public Library. The City also operates Water and Sanitary Sewer, Solid Waste Collection and Recycling, Parking Systems and Rental Properties maintenance. The City of Carbondale operates under a Council-Manager form of government with a Mayor and six City Council members. Many residents consider Carbondale to be the "Capital of Southern Illinios."
