Settled in 1679 when a leader of the Lenape Native Americans granted Hans Frederick a deed for 11,000 acres of land along the Passaic River shoreline, Clifton was originally part of the Acquackanonk Tract. Over the centuries, the region transformed from a vital agricultural community to a bustling manufacturing hub. In 1917, Clifton was officially incorporated as a city, separating from Passaic Township to accommodate its rapid growth during the early 20th century. 

Clifton's industrial boom drew a broad spectrum of residents, influencing the diverse cultural fabric. Once recognized for its textile and production sectors, the local economy now spans services, technology, and beyond.
