The City of Palo Alto is a municipal government in California that provides a full range of services and utilities to residents and businesses, including its own gas, electric, water, sewer, refuse, and storm drainage networks. It also operates public safety and emergency services, a regional airport, and a broad set of cultural and recreational amenities such as 36 parks, 39 playgrounds, five community and youth centers, 41 miles of walking/biking trails, and five libraries. Based in Palo Alto, the city sits at the heart of a well-known technology and research ecosystem that includes Stanford University and a vibrant startup community. In 2025–2026 the city has pursued governance and infrastructure initiatives, including a collaboration with the Urban Land Institute on transportation planning for the Palo Alto Transportation Center. It has also moved forward with leadership changes and security-related procurements, such as appointing a new city attorney in March 2026 and signing a contract with Orion Security for Track Watch at four at-grade crossings.
