City Teaching Alliance is an organization focused on preparing educators for leadership in urban schools through a rigorous, practice-based pathway. In partnership with American University, it offers a Master of Arts in Teaching tailored to urban contexts, combining a literacy and math emphasis with dual certification in special education and a content area. The three-year program includes extensive coaching and hands-on classroom experience, with fellows accumulating over 1,500 hours in the first year alongside a host teacher, while completing master’s coursework in the evenings. In the second year, participants assume teaching roles of their own, with continued coursework and coaching, and about three-quarters of first-year cohorts complete the full four-year program. The program targets aspiring teachers who want to serve urban communities, and the organization maintains a national footprint with programs in Baltimore, Washington, DC, Dallas, and Philadelphia. In January 2026, City Teaching Alliance DC was named the national recipient of the 2025 Mutual of America Foundation Thomas J. Moran Award.
