The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence is a 501(c)(4) organization based in Washington, DC, founded in 1974. It pursues greater freedom from gun violence through research, strategic engagement, and policy advocacy. With a very small staff, it pursues these aims through aggressive political advocacy, building personal relationships with legislators led by victims and survivors, and reframing the public debate around democratic values. 

The organization’s audience includes elected officials, constituents, and activists working on gun-violence policy. Its guiding principle is that all Americans should be able to live in communities free from gun violence. It uses its platform to hold policymakers accountable and to foreground democratic values in the policy discussion, including a framing of the NRA’s interpretation of the Second Amendment as insurrectionist.
