The Colburn School is a mid-sized higher education institution focused on performing arts, based in downtown Los Angeles. It offers music and dance education for students across the development spectrum, from beginners to those preparing for professional careers, drawing more than 2,000 students from around the world each year. The school emphasizes excellence through its faculty, facilities, and diverse performance and educational activities, aiming to foster a cohesive arts community. A major campus expansion is under construction on the downtown site, designed by Frank Gehry with acoustics by Nagata Acoustics. The project will add a 1,077-seat concert hall with a 70-musician pit and a new 100-seat dance studio theater, alongside the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute and additional learning and gathering spaces; construction began in 2024 with completion targeted for 2027. When finished, the expansion will form the largest concentration of Gehry-designed buildings in downtown Los Angeles, aligning Colburn with other landmark projects in the area.
