Columbia Records is a United States-based flagship recording label within Sony Music Entertainment, operating under the Columbia Music Group. Founded in 1888, it traces its origins to the American Graphophone Company, the successor to the Volta Graphophone Company. It was the first label to produce recorded records rather than blank cylinders and has released recordings by a broad range of singers, instrumentalists, and bands. Within Sony Music, it stands as one of the company’s three flagship labels, alongside Epic Records and RCA Records, reflecting its central role in the music portfolio. In 2024, Columbia Records partnered with Legacy Recordings to release material from the Miles Davis Quintet as part of the Bootleg Series, Vol. 8.
