Communities for a Better Environment (CBE) is a California-based nonprofit focused on environmental justice. Founded in 1978, the organization works to empower communities of color and low-income neighborhoods to prevent and reduce pollution and to build healthy, sustainable environments. To achieve this, CBE provides residents with organizing skills, leadership training, and legal, scientific, and technical assistance to confront health threats. As a mid-sized nonprofit operating in California, CBE concentrates its work in urban communities most affected by pollution. In 2026, CBE launched the California Climate and Health Equity Hub in Los Angeles to advance climate resilience and protections for frontline communities. That same year, CBE filed suit against the Port of Oakland alleging CEQA violations and health harms to East Oakland residents.
