The Community Blood Center is a not-for-profit blood center based in Dayton, Ohio, operating within the hospitals and health care sector. It began operations in September 1964 and expanded from serving two area hospitals to all general hospitals in Dayton by 1965; since 1967 its service area has grown to 25 hospitals across 15 counties, supported by a volunteer donor base. The center collects and processes blood products to meet patient transfusion needs, aiming to gather about 325 pints daily and more than 70,000 units annually, with testing, typing and daily distribution to 24 area hospitals. Its activities are financed as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, deriving income from charges to hospitals for blood products, transfusions, patient services and tests, and the distribution of tissue. In 1986 CBC expanded into tissue services through the Dayton Regional Tissue Center, which was later renamed Community Tissue Services in 1994; CTS now operates branches in multiple states alongside the Dayton headquarters and serves more than 2,000 hospital and physician clients. The organization thus encompasses both blood supply and tissue services, with hospitals and physicians as its primary customers. In early 2021 CBC engaged in partnerships with local organizations to host blood drives and offer COVID-19 antibody testing, such as a January 2021 drive conducted with the City of Lee’s Summit.
