Based in Springfield, the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts is a nonprofit organization serving the Pioneer Valley, including Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin Counties along the Connecticut River Valley. Founded in 1991, it provides a vehicle for residents to direct philanthropy and to grow a permanent endowment that supports the region's needs. The foundation acts as a resource, catalyst, and coordinator for charitable activity, aiming to respond to evolving community needs and to promote efficient management of charitable funds. Recently, the foundation partnered with La Piana to inform its strategy, designing a survey intended for nonprofit leaders, students, fund advisors, donors, and other community partners across the three counties. In January 2026 it launched a COVID-19 Response Fund to provide flexible support to organizations responding to urgent needs. It also introduced Grounded in Community, the next phase of its blog, in 2025.
