Community Works (Boston) is a small, member-directed federation of social justice–oriented organizations founded in 1982 in Boston. It operates as a cooperative fundraising effort that partners with local businesses to support member groups through workplace giving campaigns. Its approach expands traditional charitable activity to include advocacy and community organizing, increases employee awareness of community resources, and empowers donors to direct their contributions. The federation supports its member agencies through networking, training, technical assistance, and pooled resources, with governance that places decision-making in the hands of its members. Across the greater Boston area, 52 employers participate in payroll deduction campaigns benefiting Community Works, mobilizing contributions from private, public, and nonprofit sectors. Since its founding, it has raised over $5 million for member organizations and remains Massachusetts' only workplace federation focused on supporting social justice groups.
