Compaq Computer Corporation was an American IT company established in 1982 and located in the Houston area of Texas. The company focused on creating, marketing, and supporting computers and related services, contributing to early personal computing by delivering IBM PC compatible machines and, notably, by legally reverse engineering the IBM PC BIOS. Throughout the 1990s it reached the status of the leading supplier of PC systems, a position it held amid rapid growth in corporate computing. 

The business operated within IT services and IT consulting, targeting organizations that required computing hardware and ongoing support. In 2002 it was acquired by Hewlett-Packard, and the Compaq brand persisted on HP's lower-end systems until 2013, after which it became licensed to third parties for use on electronics in Brazil and India.
