Interventional Radiology (IR) is a lesser-known but invaluable specialty of medicine. It was developed in the early 1970s, and is also called Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR) or sometimes referred to as “clinical” or “surgical radiology.” Interventional physicians are rigorously trained medical doctors who use imaging technology such as CT, X-rays, MRI, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, or other imaging modalities to treat medical issues in every organ system of the body. Rather than using large, surgical incisions to treat medical issues, Interventional doctors use small incisions, cutting-edge medical devices and imaging technology to perform major medical procedures. Small incisions reduce the risk of infection, scarring, hospital stays and recovery time.
