Conad is a large retail cooperative network based in Bologna, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, organized as a federation of six independently run cooperatives. Its approach centers on people and community, linking entrepreneurs, merchants, customers, and local communities to tailor offerings to local needs. The organization traces its origins to the early 1960s, when the Consorzio Nazionale Dettaglianti was founded in 1962 by 14 buying groups and hundreds of independent retailers; today the network operates 3,174 points of sale with about 2,300 members. Conad positions itself within the retail sector as a territorially engaged player that listens to communities to determine its product and service mix. A recent development includes a 2024 partnership with Bianalisi S.p.A. to advance its omnichannel strategy and broaden its services.
