Consumers Union is a nonprofit, independent organization based in Yonkers, New York, dedicated to advancing a fair, just, and safe marketplace for consumers. It preserves its independence by not accepting outside advertising or free samples, and it relies on teams of mystery shoppers and technical experts to purchase and test products. Its principal outputs include the Consumer Reports magazine, the ConsumerReports.org website, and two newsletters, Consumer Reports on Health and Consumer Reports Money Adviser.

Its work targets individual consumers seeking reliable information to guide purchasing decisions. Operating in the book and periodical publishing industry, CU positions itself as a neutral evaluator focused on transparency and consumer protection. In June 2026, Consumers Union partnered with Yuka to test 40 popular U.S. foods, finding that about one in four exceeded daily safety levels for additives.
