The Continental Ballet Company is a Bloomington-based performing arts organization that advances classical ballet through professional productions, dancer development, and educational programming. Each season includes more than twenty performances, complemented by a touring program and performances at the Schneider Theater in the Bloomington Center for the Arts. Founded and led by Riet Velthuisen, a former European dancer, the company has operated in the Twin Cities for about 28 years and has staged over 130 formal performances for roughly 100,000 statewide attendees, including classics such as Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker, Paquita, Cinderella, and Coppelia, while reaching more than 40,000 K-12 students through residencies. The CBC School trains dancers with instructors who are themselves company members, helping sustain ballet traditions through education and outreach. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has recognized CBC by placing it on its roster of Approved Artists.
